NOD BEATEN UP 1978

Noddy Beaten Up in Porthcawl - 1978

Picture
Here are some press cuttings relating the Nod getting beaten up by the bouncer at the Stoneleigh Club, Porthcawl in 1978.

The story hardly made the headlines when it happened - but the news really broke after the court case took place the following year, in 1979.

My friends Kevin Massey and Sue O'Leary were at the Porthcawl gig in 1978. They had travelled by train - with no thought of how to get home.

They told me at the time that Nod had seen a bouncer getting heavy with some of the girl fans at the front and he made some comment over the microphone like "Hey. You're so big aren't you - pushing young girls about? Leave them alone".

The bouncer was irate that he had been belittled by Nod on stage and turned on him when the show finished.

Kevin and Sue had seen the trouble after the show with the bouncer - and as a result weren't allowed backstage after the gig.

They had nowhere to stay that night - and ended up on the streets. They made their way to the local police station - and said they were 17 years old and stranded. No car, no hotel and no money. The kind policemen let them sleep in a police cell overnight - for no charge (amazing isn't it?).

While they were in the station a great commotion ensued. Nod had pressed charges against the bouncer (Desmond Brothers) and he was arrested. Both the bouncer and Nod turned up at the police station to give statements.

Kevin and Sue saw the story all unfold in the police station.

Then the next morning, believe it or not, they were given breakfast in "their cell"  by the kind policemen.
